Merrion 1sts win by 57 runs

David Langford-Smith opened the bowling for Phoenix from the Hazeldene end after they won the toss and chose to field first. Bowling full and straight, he had opener Neil Brown LBW from the third ball of the game to bring John Anderson to the crease with Dom Joyce. The pair put on 77 runs in quick time before Dom left a ball to the impressive Osama Khan to be bowled, next ball Tyrone Kane was also bowled to leave Merrion on 78 for 3 and in trouble. Anderson was steadfast and anchored the innings while Cillian O'Donoghue (19), Rory Allwright (23) and Damian Poder (15) played around him. Anderson eventually departed for 79 from 126 balls as Merrion closed on 207 for 9 from their 50 overs. We felt this was a slightly below par score but the pitch had some life for the bowlers in it which Langford-Smith (5-44) and Khan (2-23) extracted.

We welcomed back Matt Petrie to Anglesea Road and he immediately settled into a good line while also swinging the ball prodigiously. Ted Williamson was lucky to survive some strong LBW claims before he was eventually out the same way, this was after Matt also had Rory Flanagan caught at first slip. Ryan Gallagher then sliced a drive to Allwright at point to be well caught and left Phoenix at 29-3. Jeremy Bray, Conor Kelly and Langford-Smith briefly threatened to take the game close but the wickets kept falling regularly and we eventually won by 57 runs to take 22 points from a possible 25. A jetlagged Matt took 4-37, Dom Joyce and Damian Poder both took 2-37 and John Anderson and Alex O'Brien (first senior wicket) both took a wicket apiece. A welcome return to winning ways for the side before their defence of the Bob Kerr Irish Senior Cup begins next weekend with a trip to Carrickfergus.
