Merrion C. C. 2XI vs. Oakhill 1XI, 16 May 2010 atAnglesea road
So the season for merrion 2nds began. On the hangover(quite literally) of another convincing win for Leinster over Munster, a strongMerrion outfit skippered by Alan Parkinson took to the field against a muchfancied Oakhill side.
With Parky loosing the toss Merrion were asked to have a trundle, the visitorsclearly fancied putting some early runs on the board. So at 12:30 the Merrionopening bowling attack of Angus 'Wildman' Fleming and Ronan 'Nivea' McDonaldgot us under way. The whereabouts of Richard 'Kiwi' Keaveney still unknown, butpresumed to have slept in again in his delightful Spiderman pyjamas. TomStanton kindly volunteered to sub field.
It wasn't long before Merrion got the break through. The 'Wildman' gettingformer Belvedere professional and danger man Yogesh out in the 2nd over caughtbehind by Tichy. The good start continued, as soon after, the Wildman (clearlyknowing the exact areas to hit on his own wicket) struck again. This timeformer Merrion guru David Drane falling victim to a strong leading edge caughtmid on by Kiwi. Kiwi however doing his best to convince all that he was stillin dreamland slinging his webs, only just reacting to the catch.
After a great start and 3 great spells of bowling from the Wildman, Nivea andKiwi respectively, Oakhill looked to try and rebuild the innings by generatinga partnership. Without the run rate being too flattering they managed to chipaway and gather some momentum. Cometh the day, cometh the man. Alex 'MaxFactor' O Brien started his 10 over spell with a slight hint of nerves, butsoon found his stride. A brilliant double act from the aspiring young makeupartist from Ranelagh and Sum (I genuinely couldn't even make a decent attemptat the full version) were to prove vital in restricting the visitors to a lowscore. Both bowlers picked up some wickets at a very economical rate bowlingtheir 10 over spells straight for only 36 runs. Merrion were in a strongposition and further good spells from the opening 3 seamers, who all picked upwickets, restricted the visitors to a rather low total of 114.
Notable mentions to Simon 'Wesley Snipes' Morrissey, who because of the highlevel of bowling on display wasn't required on this occasion to throw the oldarm over. Also to Cillian 'Ciller' O Donoghue, whose jontyesque run out willdefinitely feature as one of the fielding highlights for the season.
After the usual pleasant tea (thanks Aoife), the opening pair of Parky and Neil'TFC' Browne joined each other at the crease. Disaster struck. Parky wastrapped lbw third ball of the game to Yogesh. Quick to follow was the usuallyreliable Morrissey, bowled in the same over to an unplayable in swinging awaycutting once in a lifetime delivery. At 2-2 the pressure was on.
However what was to follow was a joy to watch. Neil and Ciller dispatched theballs to all parts of the ground, putting on an impressive 100 run partnershipand in doing so put merrion within touching distance of the target. Neil wasout caught behind on 57. Ciller not out 25. Rory 'rock star' Allwright hit thewinning runs giving Merrion a 7 wicket win with only 17 overs gone.
So a convincing win for the 2's, and great start to the season. Roll onMalahide next Sunday.
