Welcome to the Season

On behalf of Merrion Cricket Club Management and Youth committtee, we extend a warm welcome to all our young Cricketers for the 2018 season.  For the new members, we extend our best wishes to you and look forward to getting to know you and your families in the coming weeks ahead.

IMPORTANT: Please SAVE THE DATE – for Friday the 15th of June from 6pm, whereby we are going to hold a combined Junior section + Parents evening. We’ve got challenges for the boys & girls and a barbecue and some well-known cricketers to help us out.

The season started off with our Open day which was held on the 4th April.  Thank you to all the volunteers that made this event another successful Club day.  The weather came to the party and the Club saw one of its biggest turnouts.

While parents were registering indoors and attending a presentation, several cricket games were on going outdoors.  This was a great opportunity for the boys and girls to get to know each other and for the parents to discuss the coming season.  The Open day is generally a great community event as it signifies that summer is just around the corner and the competition and enjoyment that is cricket can now begin again.

Our membership base remains strong and wonderful to see all the new cricketers who have joined our club for the new season.  If you have as yet not managed to register we urge you to register before the end of May.  Without registration you are unable to be selected for future games.  Link is here - https://merrioncc.clubbuzz.co.uk/payyoursub

We had two fantastic evenings held with the 1st Team squad and Coach Nick Kenny putting on some great challenges for the boys underage sections. Isobel Anderson Joyce and the girls coaches put on a similar session for the Girls Juniors.

Highlights included current Leinster Lighting and Ireland players putting themselves against the boys, and a Merrion CC 1st Team squad members saying afterwards "...this is what reminded me of coming up through the club, and was great fun to give back...". Kudos to Dom Joyce for bringing the squad and for the Ladies squad in stepping up with the girls.

A big thank you to some of the coaches & volunteers that have stepped up for Sunday, in particular Mark Forbes, Pat Carty, Mark Sandys, Christian Dykstra, and Ed & Damian Joyce.

We’d also like to acknowledge Ed as our most successful Merrion Junior graduate ever, on his retirement from professional cricket. Ed exemplifies the spirit of cricket, and is the example that we’d hold up to our own Junior cricketers as what you can achieve through hard work & focus, coupled with a set of strong values. His commitment to the club is shown by his quietly pitching in at Sunday training, as he is already helping the next generation of Merrion cricketers.

As one club, with many teams – Merrion has a responsibility to not only teach the basics of the game, so that the kids can enjoy themselves – but also to instil the values of leadership, teamwork, selflessness and support. Like any sport, Cricket can be a game of high & lows, wins & losses. If you have any thoughts on how we can improve, support the kids better – or just would like to get involved more – email us at merrionccyouth@gmail.com

Across all the age groups, there has been a very positive start to the season.

Sunday morning sessions for girls and boys under 9’s continues to be very well supported.  The boys and girls have a great time learning the basics and have taken part in a Sunday blitze.  More blitzes will be taking place during the course of the season.  A big thank you to our parent volunteers in assisting with the coaching. If you would like to get involved and help out – drop us a line to merrionccyouth@gmail.com – or just come along in the morning and introduce yourself to one of the coaches.

Everyone is always welcome to join us on Sunday’s.   Please be reminded for children that are under 7 years of age, we need parents to stay and participate in the training.

The Club house is open on Sunday.  For the early morning takers please join us in the club house for a hot cup of tea/coffee and scones.
